Mac’s assault on my sister runs through my mind and blinds me as the dragon who took hold that night fights to the surface. I lose focus on everything but finding my sister before she’s harmed again. My biggest regret that night isn’t killing him, but that I killed the guy I once was, along with the man I could become.

The dark fury that gripped me even at a young age now controls who I am. If I could choose to shift between human and dragon, I would’ve learned to control that side of myself. Now, as a mid, I’m forever locked in the twilight where every moment of every day the two sides battle for dominance, neither able to take full control.

And at times like this, I could never hope to subdue the dragon.

I can match Zeke for speed and although the town is too far for one night, I can stay on my feet longer than he could; one thing I’m grateful to the dragon for.

Only when I reach my destination does my mind have room for anything else but my single-minded goal: did the others follow? Should I have left them? The dragon nudges again with a reminder what I saw Mac doing to Ailsa and sways me away from the present. Is somebody within the pack waiting to claim her instead—one who’ll violate her too?

Kill her?

There’s no question. I find Ailsa and I take her. Once things are safe, I’ll return to the others. Eloise is secure with Dorian and Zeke, and who she is now protects her.

Somebody else needs me. Not forever, but for now. I didn’t lose years of my life in Ravenhold for protecting Ailsa to watch her lose hers now.

But the thought twists guilt in my guts—that I ran and didn’t think about Eloise. I never waited in case they needed help against Nikolai and Gabriella. Hopefully between the three of them, they tore the fuckers apart.

But the dragon doesn’t listen to my head or my heart.

What if I fail? Or I walk into a trap?

Then I’ll fight for myself, for Ailsa, and for all of us.
